Product Summary

Hornady custom rifle ammunition offers more consistency and accuracy than standard ammo. This ammunition is manufactured to the tightest production tolerances in the industry and combines the highest quality brass, primers, and powders to deliver peak performances from a factory load.

The Hornady® DGS® bullets feature an advanced profile built of the toughest materials that penetrate through thick hide, dense muscle and hard bone — delivering maximum stopping power.

The business end of the DGS® bullet features a wide, flat nose that delivers maximum energy upon impact, while resisting bullet deformation and deflection. Incorporating a very hard high antimony lead core with a copper-clad steel jacket, this bullet maintains integrity and overall weight retention when driving through even the toughest hide and bone. Uniform in shape and size to the DGX® (Dangerous Game™ eXpanding) bullet, you can reliably and accurately shoot both from the same firearm with little to no shift in point of aim or impact.

Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
There are two versions of the 450/400 Nitro Express: 450-400 3 1/4", based on a blackpowder case; and 450-400-3" (400 Jeffery), designed for smokeless powder and introduced by W.J. Jeffery in 1902. Although performance is very similar they are not interchangeable, as the 450-400-3" has a thicker rim. The 450-400 3 1/4" is slightly more powerful, but the 450-400-3" is more common today and offers better load density with modern propellents. Collectively they were extremely popular a century ago, probably the most popular cartridge among tiger hunters and considered adequate for the world's largest game. On Craig Boddington's recommendation Hornady added the 450-400-3" to their dangerous game line; it has been popular in the Ruger Number One single shot and is currently chambered by most modern double rifle makers. With a 400-grain bullet at 2100 fps it develops much less recoil than big-bore cartridges, yet is perfect for buffalo and adequate for elephant. Kynoch loads both versions. — Craig Boddington

Craig Boddington convinced Steven Hornady to restart product of this grand old cartage and I am very glad he did. I bought a Sabatti double rifle in .450/.400 3" Nitro Express , it was my 3rd double rifle and what a joy it is. They were regulated with this Hornady ammunition. Mine shoots 2" groups at 50 yards and has accounted for 4 cape buffalo so far. The 450/400 is plenty powerful enough for buffalo.. With these solid 400 grain bullets , yo'll get a pass through on broad sides shots breaking both shoulders. It can be hard to find the ammo some times so it's a good idea to stock up when you can. The recoil s relatively mild for a big bore about like a .375 H&H I guess that is partly due to te fact most doubles weigh more and absorb the recoil better. I also have a Sabatti in .500 NE, that can be tough shooting at the range for more than 6 shots a day, but the 450/400 can be shot for much longer shooting practice times. Hornady did a good job on this. Just wish the would produce larger quantities.
