Product Summary

Winchester Model 1873 Sporter Lever Action Rifle 44-40 Winchester 14 Round Octagon Barrel Black Walnut Pistol Grip Stock 534229140

Like no other. Do you like the look of a pistol grip stock on a classic rifle like the '73? Read on if you do. Because there is no doubt that there is something entirely cool about a pistol grip stock that has been combined with an octagon barrel. It has the look more of a dedicated rifleman than a working cowboy. You may love this rifle for other reasons, but the fact remains that a '73 like this is purely a classic. But we have taken it a step beyond with a walnut stock with fine Grade II/III walnut that simply gives it the look of the special limited rifles produced by Winchester in the mid-1800's that became the legend of stories and movies.

Timeless styling. The classic rifle-style forearm offers a timeless look and feel. It features a polished blued steel receiver, lever, crescent buttplate and forearm cap. And then the crescent buttplate is the final touch -- slipping right into your shoulder for a more solid hold from any shooting position.

Set your sights. The rear tang is drilled and tapped for tang mounted rear sight (not included). Features a semi-buckhorn rear sight and a Marble’s gold bead front sight.

Features:

- Grade II/III Walnut Pistol Grip Stock with a satin oil finish that’s velvet smooth to the touch

- Classic Rifle-Style Forearm for the timeless look and feel of the original Model 1873

- Color Case Hardening on the robust steel receiver, lever, crescent buttplate and forearm cap

- protect against corrosion

- Crescent Buttplate slips right into your shoulder for a more solid hold from any shooting position

- Semi-Buckhorn Rear Sight with Marble Arms

- Gold Bead Front Sight gets you on target quickly

- Steel Loading Gate for smoother loading

- Receiver Top Tang is drilled and tapped for an optional tang-mounted rear sight that gives you a more precise sight picture and the timeless look and feel of shooting a long-barreled frontier rifle

Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 44-40 Winchester (44 WCF) was introduced by Winchester in 1873 in their Model 1873 lever action. The '73, "the gun that won the West," was the first truly successful repeater, and its 44-40 cartridge was quickly adopted by other manufacturers, including both Colt and Smith & Wesson in revolvers. Using a .427-inch bullet, the standard load features a 200-grain bullet at about 1100 feet per second, producing 588 foot-pounds of energy. This is not a lot of power, but the 44-40 was probaby the most popular sporting cartridge of the 19th Century, accounting for untold amounts of game. It remained the most popular chambering in the 1892 Winchester, and was a common chambering in both rifles and handguns at least through the 1940s. The growth in Cowboy Action shooting has revived it; the 44-40 has less recoil than the 45 Colt, and serves as a common chambering for rifles and revolvers. Ammo is readily available and it is chambered to numerous reissues and reproductions. — Craig Boddington

Winchester has hit a home run with the newest '73s. The rifle has a rapid taper 24" octagon barrel that was special order only back in the day. Up side is it makes the rifle version lighter on the front end but still plenty stable to shoot easily off hand with. All the wood on these guns is spectacular, from the straight grained Grade I American Black Walnut used on this gun to the presentation beautiful II/IV on the color cased guns to the exhibition grade V/VI grade wood used on the SHOT SHOW Special this year. Spectacular and most importantly oil finished like the originals. This '73 is short stroked compared to an original 1873 but it is not a SASS short stroked race gun. But no question it does make a great SASS competitors rifle. I actually like the more traditional lever throw on these guns compared to my full race Uberti. This series of rifles from Winchester is an exceptional bargain IMO for price and quality in a 1873 styled rifle. Hard not to find a model you like! I am a big fan of the original blued gun and oil finished American Walnut. Winchester made a stunning rifle this time around.
