Product Summary

Taylor 1873 Carbine 44-40 Winchester Rfile 19" Barrel Casehardened Frame With Saddle Ring

The 1873 Carbine is a lightweight variation of the iconic lever action. The short round barrel means less heft and more maneverability whether hunting, competing, or simply enjoying time at the range. They feature a barrel band and a flat butt plate shape. The carbine is made to move. This rifle is a great option for a younger shooters, as they are the lightest 1873 rifle variation available. The 1873 carbine features a case hardened frame , rear ladder sight, and a walnut stock. This model does have a saddle ring installed.

The 1866 was already quite popular when the smaller, yet quite similar 1873 model was released. It became an immediate favorite. The Winchester Repeating Arms Company may have thought that domestic military sales would make up most of the orders for the firearm, but in fact, civilian sales and international military purchases were what brought in profit that year. In that day, the 1873 was the first lever action available with a broad variety of options. Today, an array of options is still offered in Taylor's 1873 line. The carbine model features a carbine style buttstock & forend, case hardened frame with blued finish parts, and round barrel. Taylor's also offers two custom action options on all 1873 models. The Runnin' Comanchero® action package includes a custom short-stroke action, lightened hammer and trigger pull, butt cover, lever wrap, rear sight dovetail blank, and rounded front sight. The Taylor Tuned option includes a custom action with hand polishing, custom hammer and lever springs, custom magazine tube spring, and an overall lightened action. Our custom actions feature one of the smoothest hammer and trigger pulls on the market.

Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 44-40 Winchester (44 WCF) was introduced by Winchester in 1873 in their Model 1873 lever action. The '73, "the gun that won the West," was the first truly successful repeater, and its 44-40 cartridge was quickly adopted by other manufacturers, including both Colt and Smith & Wesson in revolvers. Using a .427-inch bullet, the standard load features a 200-grain bullet at about 1100 feet per second, producing 588 foot-pounds of energy. This is not a lot of power, but the 44-40 was probaby the most popular sporting cartridge of the 19th Century, accounting for untold amounts of game. It remained the most popular chambering in the 1892 Winchester, and was a common chambering in both rifles and handguns at least through the 1940s. The growth in Cowboy Action shooting has revived it; the 44-40 has less recoil than the 45 Colt, and serves as a common chambering for rifles and revolvers. Ammo is readily available and it is chambered to numerous reissues and reproductions. — Craig Boddington
