.22 CB Cap (Conical Ball ) is a .22 caliber rimfire cartridge dating back to 1888. The case is a very short .420-inch. Original .22 CB Cap ammunition had no propellant charge, just the primer; modern loads use a very mild powder charge, resulting in a significant velocity difference of 350 to 853 fps with an 18-grain bullet. .22 CB Cap ammunition at the higher velocity (with propellant charge) is still loaded. Power level is considerably less than the .22 Short, so the cartridge's only purposes are plinking and for very small pests at extremely short ranges. Originally intended for "indoor" target shooting, even though very mild the .22 CB Cap is too powerful to use with pellet rifle traps, so requires a backstop or trap adequate for the .22 Short.
