The 284 Winchester was introduced in 1963 in Winchester's Model 88 lever-action rifle. Decades hhead of its time, it is actually one of the first "short, fat" cartridges with a rebated rim and a larger diameter case. The intent was to produce "270 Winchester-like" velocity in a cartridge that can be housed in short actions, and although the 284 Winchester was never popular it comes pretty close: The remaining factory load pushes a 150-grain bullet at 2860 feet per second. Winchester has been the only producer of ammunition, but several bolt-action rifles have been chambered to 284 Winchester. It is actually a good cartridge that doesn't deserve to be as overlooked as it has been.
