Embracing the proven concept of the .300 Whisper, the 300 Blackout version of the PWS MK116 extends the capability of the platform by allowing the concurrent use of both subsonic and supersonic ammunition in the same platform even from the same magazine if the user so chooses.

Utilizing the proven system originally designed for the MK107, the MK116 uses a mid length gas piston system. The operating system, designed after the venerable AK-47, features a long stroke fixed operating rod design with an adjustable gas block, 15" handguard and free-floated barrel.

Understanding the importance of an ultra-reliable package that is light as possible, mil-spec forgings are used for the upper and lower receiver. Additional features include the BCM GUNFIGHTER charging handle; the PWS enhanced buffer tube and an ALG Defense QMS trigger. The rifle is rounded out with industry leading features such as Magpul MOE grip, MOE stock, and MBUS2 sights.

The 300 AAC Blackout (300 BLK) was developed in 2009/2010 by Advanced Armament Corporation and approved by Sporting Arms and Ammunition Institute (SAAMI) in 2011. Based on the 223 Remington case necked up to 30-caliber, it was intended for the M4 Carbine and designed to function in standard AR15/M16 magazines. Thus converting an AR to 300 AAC Blackout requires nothing more than an upper receiver group. Dimensionally it is identical to the 300 Whisper, but the 300 Blackout is fully standardized. Supersonic and subsonic ammunition is manufactured, with a 125-grain bullet producing 2215 feet per second, while the subsonic load uses a heavier bullet at much lower velocity: 220-grain bullet at 1080 fps.
