The 1866 was already quite popular when the smaller, yet quite similar 1873 model was released. It became an immediate favorite. The Winchester Repeating Arms Company may have thought that domestic military sales would make up most of the orders for the firearm, but in fact, civilian sales and international military purchases were what brought in profit that year. In that day, the 1873 was the first lever action available with a broad variety of options. Today, an array of options is still offered in Taylor's 1873 line. This straight stock model features a classic smooth walnut buttstock & forend, and a half octagonal barrel. Taylor's also offers two custom action options on all 1873 models. The Comanchero® action package includes a custom short-stroke action, lightened hammer and trigger pull, butt cover, lever wrap, and gold bead front sight. The Taylor Tuned option includes a custom action with hand polishing, custom hammer and lever springs, custom magazine tube spring, and an overall lightened action. Our custom actions feature one of the smoothest hammer and trigger pulls on the market.

The 357 Magnum was introduced by Smith & Wesson in 1935 and initially chambered in their heavy-frame double-action revolver, the 357 was the first "magnum" handgun. Based on the 38 Special case lengthened to 1.29 inches, it was the world's most powerful handgun cartridge until the 44 Magnum. Offering considerably more power and penetration than the 38 Special, it was standard among many law enforcement agencies for decades. It is still widely manufactured in double- and single-action revolvers (and some rifles), available from virtually all revolver manufacturers; and all manufacturers of handgun ammunition offer a variety of 357 Magnum loads. It is a common choice for personal defense, and 357 revolvers have the advantage of handling less expensive and lighter-recoiling 38 Special loads for practice. As a hunting cartridge the 357 Magnum is probably the lightest cartridge that should be considered for deer-sized game. — Craig Boddington
