7.62 Nagant (7.62×38mmR Nagant) was designed in 1895 by Belgian Emile Peiper for the Nagant revolver. Adopted by Czarist Russia in 1895, the Nagant and its 7.62x38R cartridge remained in service until 1930. Officially replaced by the Tokarev, Nagants remained in use throughout WWII. The Nagant revolver was unique in that it sealed the cylinder/barrel gap. During firing the front edge of the cartridge case enters the barrel, and the meplat of the bullet must be seated flush with the end of the case. The 7.62 Nagant, though clearly successful and still manufactured, is a very mild revolver cartridge using a light 108-grain bullet at a moderate 1100 fps.
